Mildura: a Must-Visit Australian Town

Mildura grapes
With a population of 30,000 and established in 1887 Mildura is an Australian city worth visiting for the adventurous visitor to learn a thing or two about its rich history. The regional city located in northwestern Victoria is slightly over 550 kilometres from Melbourne and also happens to be in Sunraysia region. Elevated at 51 metres above sea level, Mildura has a warm climate that averages lows of 10 degrees and highs of 23 which mean it is more than perfect for a number of activities.

The origin of the name Mildura is contested with some quarters saying it originated with the indigenous inhabitants of the region while others believe it has a meaning in one of the local numerous dialects. What is known is that it has no precedent whatsoever in the English language. Due to abundance of food in the Mildura region, many aboriginal inhabitants called the region home. These included YerreYerre and the Latje. European settlers duly arrived in the area in1857 and their major preoccupation was grazing goats in the rich fields.

In the last quarter of 1800’s the region saw a major setback that resulted from animal disease outbreak that devastated their livestock. To aggravate the situation further, there was a major financial recession happening at the time. These factors almost indirectly hindered any growth of the area. But due to the unrelenting spirit of the locals and the Europeans, the area took over from where it had stopped and started to grow again. To complement this growth Mildura began to take shape as the dominant town in the region through development of suburbs.

Some train services began to be offered to the suburbans taking them either to Red Cliffs and Merbein in the 1920s. From these years the town even occasioned the development of satellite townships around it.Mildura had indeed taken shape and proclaimed as an Australian city in 1934.

Because of the unfavourable climatic conditions that include an annual rainfall that reaches only 11.1 inches, the area that has rich soils that support the growing of several fruits is along the rivers. Although most of these required to be irrigated all year round, the little rains nevertheless helped things. The local thriving fruit industry prompted the influx of workers from the Mediterranean states.

The thriving grape farming is worth noting as the region is the biggest producer in all of Victoria as it supplies more than 80 percent of the total. There also numerous wineries in Mildura and the region prides in supplying grapes to other regions.

This is also a tourist haven owing to its many attractions and the activities that take place there. A visitor to Mildura would have lots of options whatever their age gender or social affiliations. There are paddle steamers that take tourists for rides as well as boat cruises. The presence of Murray River makes things even better when it comes to watersports. The tourists, either local or foreign, who love to take part in adrenaline-filled activities, they should not worry as the still weather conditions make the area perfect for hot air ballooning.

While here, there are plenty of classy Mildura motels that any tourist should take their time to enjoy their stay.
