The Best Options for Natural Retaining Walls

brisbane sandstone

Natural stone is becoming very much in demand for retaining walls due to its artistic appearance. There are many types of natural stone, limestone, granite and sandstone are just to name a few. Despite their unusual appearance natural stone also acts as a method of controlling erosion.

These natural stone retaining walls are built by stacking the stone on top of each other without the use of cement or mortar to keep it in place, the weight of the rocks and the friction keeps the rocks in place, this is very common when using brisbane sandstone

Sandstone retaining walls is the preferred option when it comes to separating spaces in the yard, enclosures for flower patches and to demarcate the land borders. Sandstone comes in grey, yellow, red, and white colors. Due to its earthy look and the fact that these colors blend with some of the colors used within the home, it is the most preferred choice for retaining walls. It also gives the landscape and home a well manicured look.

Sandstone retaining walls will last many years, maybe even decades if the best quality stone is used and it is constructed properly. Today there are many sandstone retaining walls that have been built many years ago and are still standing.

Other material such as granite, marble and limestone tend to be popular stones for retaining walls as well, the reason for this being so is that granite is heavier and has a lovely grey and reddish colour. Marble is also heavy, grainy and has a streaked appearance as opposed to limestone which is a tone lighter and much more light weight.

When designing sandstone retaining walls, the style and shape will depend on the size and location of the property and the type of landscape. The height of the wall may vary depending on its purpose such as, if the retaining wall serves as a demarcation of the property or if the property owner’s sole purpose is to keep their privacy. Shorter retaining walls will be the best choice for flower patches, hedges or to simply border a driveway. Sandstone retaining walls also have a natural water drainage system as water can flow freely through the sandstone and hold the soil in place making it the most preferred choice when choosing material for retaining walls.
