If you plan to buy wholesale from China perhaps the first things you should know is that it is
not a walk in the park and it is quite a lucrative business venture. So if you
are willing to work hard and if you have the money to invest, you can expect
some good returns from a business you can operate for a long time. Let us look
at some of the important things you should understand first before venturing
into the unknown.
If you are a first-time importer, you should know that you
are wholly responsible for the product you will be selling. This means that
your product needs to meet safety standards. This also means that you will be
responsible for any product safety issues that may arise out of the use of your
product. To illustrate, a seller who sells horse saddles will be responsible
should one of their buyers fall off a horse while using the saddle. At the very
least you will be the point of recourse should customers be unsatisfied with
your product.
The takeaway here is to try to avoid products that can
potentially be dangerous or cause harm. You should also purchase product
liability insurance and be sure that the Chinese manufacturer or supplier you
will be dealing with is covered by product liability insurance as well. The amount
of insurance coverage to get will depend upon the type of product you plan to
sell.
Again for first-time importers, the two places to search for
products to sell would be trade shows in China and the Internet. The Internet
has had a significant impact on reducing trade barriers for Chinese products. But
finding a product to sell over the Internet can also get tricky. It would be
best if you include a trip to China in your capital which would bring you to
the actual place where the products are made.
Chinese goods makers and suppliers can often be found in
online directories where there would be a listing of their products, a
background on the company, and their contact information. If you plan to
conduct your purchase online, make sure that the supplier would be willing to
send you a sample first and that they accept an online payment system and not a
wire or bank transfer.
