Retaining Walls – The Basics

Brisbane retaining walls

The state of Queensland is a highly populated, urban state located on the south east coast of Australia. Its capital is Brisbane which is a metropolitan area spanning almost 6000 km2. This state is famously known as the “sunshine state”. A large area is covered by the great divider range which has resulted in a rocky and mountainous terrain bordered on the east by the corral sea. According to the Koppen climate classification most of Queensland, Brisbane included has a ‘humid subtropical climate’, with hot, humid summers and dry, slightly cool winters. This state has an excellent road network and Brisbane is easily accessible from the key cities throughout Australia by road, rail and air. As a result, it has become a hotspot for domestic settlements and new building developments. Due to the topography & geological character of the state and of Brisbane, retaining walls are used popularly in construction. They not only give stability to the building, but also serve to add aesthetic value. A retaining wall is a construction technique which basically holds back soil (or other materials) and prevents lands from eroding. They are generally used to hold back a slope or to hold back a land fill. This is usually done in order to make the land form compatible with a construction plan. Many types of materials are used to build retaining walls including stone, timber, concrete etc... In the south eastern cities of Queensland retaining walls are commonly used for both construction and aesthetic purposes. Brisbane retaining walls are extensively used in private homes and commercial buildings. They are mainly used for homes which have attached garages and they are a very common feature in the south eastern areas of Australia. Since it is an almost unavoidable element it is best to make the most of this element. You can use it to increase the functionality and attractiveness of your building. They can be used even in the garden to increase space and are sure to allow you to have a larger lawn area. Covering up retaining walls is a costly affair and therefore it is best to use attractive materials such as granite, bush rock, sandstone etc... So use retaining walls to increase the beauty of your building while preserving its strength and practicality…
