Located on the South East coast of Australia, Queensland is a highly populated, urban state. It is famously known as the “sunshine state” and a large area of the state is situated at the foot of the Great Divider Range. This has resulted in a rocky and mountainous terrain in which slopes are a common land form. It is the second largest state in Australia and its capital is Brisbane which is a metropolitan area spanning over an area of almost 6000km2. When it comes to the climatic aspect, Brisbane like most of Queensland experiences hot, sultry summer days and dry, slightly cool winters; and its climate is classified a ‘humid subtropical climate’ according to the Koppen Climate Classification. The city is easily accessible by road, rail and air and has a good internal road network. The easy access, agreeable climate, convenience and atmosphere of Brisbane has made it a good pick for many domestic and other types of settlements. In other words the city has become a hotspot for domestic constructions and new building developments. The topography of this city has resulted in a large number of landfills taking place in order to create larger construction spaces. Due to this we see that retaining walls are used fairly commonly in construction. As most construction sites in this city are situated on landfills, it is a vital that we do all in our power to avoid erosion and to successfully hold back the land mass. Retaining walls or retention walls are a perfect solution for this as they are known to hold back landfills and prevent erosion, while adding strength and stability to the foundation of a structure. They allow us to level the land which increases the usable space, and also allow rain water to seep through without washing away the soil. Many materials can be used to build retaining walls like rocks, timber, masonry and boulders. In Brisbane sandstone is one of the best materials to use as it is found in abundance and is relatively cheap. Sandstone has beautiful earthy hues and is extremely porous, which ensures proper seepage. Sandstone retaining walls will add a rustic, natural sense of beauty to your constructions!
