Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloth Nappies

Bringing up a baby is not an easy task anywhere in the world. A baby has sensitive needs that need to be taken into account at every stage of its life. Among the items that go hand in hand with babies from the moment they are born until they are toilet-trained are diapers or nappies. Newborns soils nappies more often than older babies and that alone can bring great hassle to any parent.

The first notable advantage is the fact that cloth nappies present less chances of the baby developing rashes. The three major ingredients for a rash to occur are wetness, body heat and chemicals. The presence of one of these three factors or a combination of two or more is a sure ground to breed body rash. Nappies have no chemicals but diapers do. These are supposedly there to absorb wetness but they end up doing more than that. These chemicals combine with the wetness and then speeded up by the baby’s bodily heat to cause rashes. Only seven percent of rashes, a research shows, are caused by nappies.

Another advantage of nappies is that they allow the baby’s skin to breathe. A skin that is not getting enough air is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and other agents. Diapers on the other hand are so closed up that a baby will feel uncomfortable for the whole time that a diaper is on him. When a cloth nappy gets wet, it is easy to notice and then you can change it immediately giving the baby less chances of developing irritations..
With the negative impacts that our activities have had on the planet, it would be only fair if everyone played a part in doing something that will stop further degradation. And nappies provide that. How? Because they are not disposable, people have to reuse them as opposed to throwing them into landfills as solid waste. Studies reveal that disposable diapers contribute to four percent of that landfill waste on our planet. That is yet another advantage of cloth nappies; they have no negative effects on the ecosystem.

One of the few disadvantages of fabric nappies is the fact that they can be quite tedious to change the baby especially while travelling. While diapers allow you to just throw them in the nearest garbage bin, you have to come up with a method of keeping nappies, soiled and all, in your nappy bag. Nevertheless, they are an economic and environmentally friendly at the same time. For cute and cheap fabric nappies in great designs and the fabulous nappy bags to match, head over to Baby Bella.
