Welcome To ArmidaleThe City Of Historic Churches

Armidale church
It has for long been regarded as the region of historic churches that are a living testament of colonial era architecture. Welcome to Armidale, the Australian city that boasts of four seasons. Situated in the Australian state of New South Wales and tucked between Sydney and Brisbane, Armidale has other famous attractions. These are the old churches that are scattered all over it. Let’s us look at some of these famous houses of worship.

Among the most prominent churches that Armidale takes pride in is St Johns Kelly’s Plains. Situated in Kelly’s Plain, this Anglican church holds a trove of information as far as Anglican church is concerned. The original building, made of timber, was erected in 1896. Through some factors that came to play, the timber building was replacedby a brick one in 1923 that stands till today. For those who have an interest in old church cemeteries, this church located 6 kilometres south of the city is a good place to begin.

The St Mary and St Joseph Catholic Cathedral is located just two blocks from the city centre and any visitor can easily walk there and explore this magnificent building. The diocese of Armidale is an old one having been established in 1912. A walk within the massive buildings will reveal that the Cathedral was consecrated in 1912. A stroll here also provides one with the opportunity to see the bishop’s house and the Ursuline Convent. While it can be an architectural wonder for any visitor, they can also get a chance to attend one of the many wedding or baptism masses held there.

The other magnificent cathedral worth visiting is St Peter’s Anglican Church. As the first Anglican church in the whole of Armidale, it was also the first to be built with brick as opposed to stones. With its foundation stone laid in 1873, there is provided a chronology of events from that date to when it was completed; from whom gave out a piece of land to build it to the name of the bishop whose visit was instrumental in its founding. It is one of those buildings that carry a lot of intricate art that astound locals and foreigners in equal measure.

It is also worth visiting St Mary’s West Armidale and have a feel of the warmth that this little and somewhat hidden church radiates. This church is located on westernmost block of Rusden Street. To the history lovers, this old church has lots of history and the visitor can also get to attend one of the services.

The tour to these historic churches would not be complete without a visit to St Mark’s Anglican church that was established in 1909. What astounds many is that though it is more than a hundred years old, this church is made of timber. A visitor would learn that fundraisings were held in that time to purchase the land on which the church sits. The magnificent building sits atop a hill above a local village called Nimbin. There are many other historic churches in Armidale which include Presbyterian church and Salvation Army.

Just like the churches, there are many fantastic Armidale motels to stay in. One great option is the Armidale Regency Motel. Boasting 3.5 star facilities and affordable rates, the Armidale Regency Motel is definitely worth a visit.
