The Colourful History of Yamba

Once known as Shoal Bay, Yamba town easily takes the prize among the Australian towns that carry loads of history. Located at the mouth of the famed Clarence River, this town’s construction began in October 1862 with Clarence River heads Post Office being the first building to be completed. Initially, Matthew Flinders, the first European to set foot in the area, had washed down thoughts about the area developing and instead dismissed it as dangerous and unworthy of further exploration before he sailed away.

Well, Flinders was in for a rude shock for by 1830, a thriving timber harvesting industry had already been established. And by the early 1900s, the coastal town had already started to take shape stamping its position as one of those to watch out for in Australia. By 1885, the whole area had only about 340 people but that has risen considerably since then. Located about 671 kilometres north east of Sydney, Yamba has a population of about seven thousand inhabitants and which can be tripled during the peak tourist seasons.

The 1900s saw various industries setting camp there. From guesthouses to fishing and sugarcane growing, they slowly but surely began to make the town take shape. It was sugarcane that was regarded as the topmost product of the region owing to the rich soils that favoured its growth and large plantations were established. Fishing also progressed to expand and bigger and better boats were sent down from other areas.

Once served by old steamers and riverboats that used to ply between Sydney and Grafton, the growth of Yamba took a new turn when those water transport methods were replaced by road connections and an efficient rail system. From the second half of the 20th century, the region had stamped its mark as one of the holiday resorts worth noting in the whole of Australia.

Among the factors that have positively impacted on Yamba’s fast growth is the port that is among the two in the NSW region. The major export from the port of Yamba is timber and it also undertakes regular cargo services. These are mostly to Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands.

The modern Yamba town is among the towns that are adored by holidaymakers for a number of factors: it is home to stunning attractions that include wildlife, rare plants and activities. It also has more than ten beaches that have the ability to endear any visitor to them. These beaches include: Turners, Barri, Woody Head, Whiting and Back Beach. The peak tourist seasons are December to January through Easter and then again at the middle of the year.

The town teems with numerous establishments that are world class. In fact, Yamba accommodation facilities rank among the finest in the entire country. The Yamba Sun Motel is a perfect example of a fantastic place to stay when in Yamba. Ideally located near the major tourist attractions and their services are out-of-this-world. Suites to satisfy different tastes are on offer and their rates can only be said to be competitive. To satisfy the needs of holidaymakers, Yamba has countless activities that one can take part in; from fishing to surfing to swimming, every visitor never lacks something that interests him.
