Mildura is especially known for its agricultural outputs that give major competition to other producers in the country. Situated 550 kilometres from Melbourne, this city is in a class of its own due to the far it has come from and the obstacles it has overcome since it was established in the 1880s. With less than favourable climatic conditions to grow most crops, the early inhabitants of Mildura were pastoralists and sheep and goats were their preferred livestock. The pastures were in abundance and ideal for the activity and even the Europeans who settled there in the mid 1800 took it up.
But that was to change in the early 1900s when the region started opening up. The area is semi-arid in nature and that does not deter the locals from irrigating their farms to earn a place as one of the top producers of fruits in the country. Mildura is the region responsible for the production of more than 80 percent of Victoria’s grapes and is thus the biggest producer in all of the state. This is a great feat in a region that receives an annual rainfall that averages 11.1 inches!
While visitors would have the choice of visiting the many vineyards in the area, there are other attractions that the region is famed for. Tourism is a major economic activity in the area owing to the designation of Mildura as a top holiday destination. This city with a population of about 30,000 people has warm weather, and the massive Murray River passes through it. A visitor who gets a kick out of river cruises would do that and more here on this great river.
While not on the Murray River cruises, one can also visit the numerous citrus farms that dot the region. One would get the opportunity to learn the step by step production of the fruits. The best thing about this destination is that these fruits industries have helped the transport sector grow and diversify. There area is served by buses and trains. The visitor who wishes to hire a car to drivethemselves through the region can do it.
Other places to visit while in Mildura include the world famous Huttah – Kulkyne National Park, home to different kinds of flora and fauna.
